Project Last Chance

At this small training centre, near the centre of Cape Town, the majority of learners are adolescents (15-20 years), who were forced to leave school at an early age, and are now given the opportunity to continue their education. For almost all participants, the project will be their last chance of completing an education and improving their outlook on life.

Project information

  • The site is a small training centre in the Woodstock district of Cape Town;
  • Project is a well organized project in which they operate on the 4 P's: Present, Punctual, Prepared, Participate;
  • The target group of this school is children aged 15 to 20 years, originated from the townships who were, out of (sheer) necessity and for various reasons, forced to leave school at an early age. At this small-scaled school they are given the opportunity to continue their education. In practice this means their last chance to complete their education for a better future;
  • The students are expected to be serious and to enforce this, students grant a subsidy for hard work, but when the effort of the student is unsatisfactory they are no longer subsidized;
  • This is a project that is small-scaled and well-organized with a project leader and 8 teachers;
  • For this unique project we are looking for:
    1. Volunteers with teaching experience who are willing to work for 6 weeks or longer. It is intended that a volunteer will give intensive assistance to 1 or 2 pupils outside the classes mostly in English. (please note that the experience of the volunteer determines the subject). The pupils levels are low and by the personal attention and assistance at this exceptional school we hope the volunteers in this project can impart to and extend the knowledge of the pupils;
    2. Highly motivated volunteers who are available during 4 to 6 weeks (or longer). It is intended that these volunteers assist in the 'English Literacy' of the pupils. This means that the volunteer assists different students in English reading. English reading skills are a must as the level determines their career opportunities. For most students English is their 2nd or 3rd language;
  • The volunteer is self-reliant, can work independently and is able to provide pedagogical and socially insights to pupils if required;
  • There is a class teaching opportunity and a need for volunteers who can teach computer skills;
  • Small-scale project, with opportunities to give a more personal interpretation;
  • Working hours are from 09.00 hours to 13.30 hours or longer should the volunteer want to organize after-school activities;
  • Open to 6 weeks and longer, depending on the duties.

To allow the voluntary work to continue more structured, the volunteer is asked to write a report to be able to inform his or her successor.
